Nature:A colorless or yellowish, oily, flammable liquid with a slight smell of onion. Soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, aromatic hydrocarbons, slightly soluble in carbon disulfide, aliphatic hydrocarbons and water. 

Application: It is used as a methylating agent for the manufacture of dimethyl sulfoxide, caffeine, vanillin, aminopyrine, trimethoprim and the pesticide acemethamidophos. It is used as a reagent for the determination of coal tar, as a methyl substituent in organic synthesis, and as a solvent for aromatic hydrocarbons. It is mainly used as a methylation reagent in the production of pesticides, and methyl groups are introduced into molecules. Dimethyl sulfate is a widely used methylating agent in organic synthesis of pesticide, dye, medicine and fragrance industry. It is used to manufacture methyl ester, methyl ether, methylamine, etc. It is the raw material of dimethyl sulfoxide, caffeine, codeine, aminopyrazoline, trimethoprim, vanillin and pesticide acemethamidophos.
