Nature:A colorless, odorless, oily liquid; when containing impurities, it has a slight ammonia odor. It is hygroscopic. It is insoluble in ethers and chlorinated solvents, slightly soluble in benzene, and miscible with water, methanol, ethanol, acetic acid, acetone, dioxane, ethylene glycol, phenol, and lower esters.
Application:Formamide is used as an animal glue, paper softener and solvent; in the spinning of acrylonitrile copolymers; as a solvent in unsaturated amine polymerization; in pharmaceutical production; as a solvent for purifying oils and fats; and in the aforementioned dissolving applications. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of imidazoles, pyrimidines, 1,3,5-triazines, caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine. It is used as a raw material in dyes, fragrances, pigments, adhesives, textile auxiliaries, and paper treatment agents. It is also a raw material for the production of formic acid and dimethylformamide.
